Introduction:
Land transport sector consumes 19% of total energy consumption in the Kingdom, representing 810,000 barrels of fuel per day. SEEC, in cooperation with several relevant entities, aimed to apply various initiatives to improve the efficiency of fuel consumption for the imported light-duty vehicles. The Saudi Corporate Average Fuel Economy (CAFE) standard aims to improve the fuel consumption of vehicles in the Kingdom by (3%) on annual basis.
Scope of Work
- Light-duty vehicles “LDVs”.
- Heavy-duty vehicles “HDVs”.
The Land Transport Sector Initiatives Improving EE in LDVs
Improving EE in LDVs
Improving EE in LDVs
Projects:
- Saudi Arabia Corporate Average Fuel Economy Standard.
- Fuel Economy Labeling Requirements for New Light Duty Vehicles .
Findings:
- 19.2% improvement in new fleet’s fuel economy, since the beginning of the fuel economy standard
- 26% increase in the number of vehicles registered as “excellent” and above
Improving Tires Energy Efficiency for the new vehicle
Improving Tires Energy Efficiency for the new vehicle
Projects:
- Implement the first phase of the tires EE requirements in November 2015
- Implement the second phase of the the requirements in November 2019, and the second phase of the heavy-duty vehicles tires in November 2020, where these phases are including higher EE requirements
Findings:
- The number of the high efficient tires registered (tires within the green range) have increased by more than 65%.

Pre-purchase instructions:
- For each class of vehicles, there are high and low fuel-efficient vehicles. Therefore, make sure to buy vehicles with the highest fuel economy level by looking at the fuel economy label.
- Make sure to purchase highly fuel-efficient tyres by viewing the tires energy efficiency label .
- Make sure to choose the tyre size as recommended by the vehicle’s manufacturer.
Post-purchase instructions:
- Periodic maintenance of the vehicle and adherence to the maintenance schedule indicated in the vehicle owner’s manual improves the fuel efficiency.
- Using the engine oil recommended by manufacturer can reduce fuel consumption by 2%;
- Marinating the tyre air pressure as recommended by the vehicle’s manufacturer can preserve the lifetime of tyres, improve safety, and reduce fuel consumption.
- Make sure to balance the tires periodically, because this reduces fuel consumption and extends the life of the tire as it reduces the friction of the tire with the road.
- Make sure you are using the correct fuel grade. Use the fuel recommended in your vehicle owner's manual to get the best performance for your vehicle.

Services:
In case you desire to purchase a light-duty vehicle or tyre, verify the information on the vehicle’s fuel economy label or the tyre’s energy efficiency label by scanning the QR Code in the “Taakkad” app developed by the Saudi Arabian Standards Organization (SASO) in cooperation with SEEC. “Taakkad” application can be downloaded from
